Four Friends Barista Class – All about beans

Posted on Updated on

Besides chocolate and tea that Four Friends Cafe serve, I do love freshly ground coffee. I am not much of a coffee person but I am in a desperate hunt for the aroma of roasted coffee beans.  Richard Tho, a coffee enthusiast claims the perfect coffee beans do a great deal to brewing the best cup of coffee.

An experienced barista, who is filled with coffee enthusiasm, won several awards and certificates such as 2010 1st place Home Barista Competition and Triangulation Cupping. He judges in AASCA (Australian Speciality Coffee Association) and loves to get together EVERY Friday 10am cupping event at Reuben Hills, Surry Hills.

To fully understand coffee, Richard gives us inside information of the coffee taster’s flavour wheel. This chart unfolds many flavours from crisp clean taste to notably rich cream flavour.

To examine our tastebuds, Rosa from Rosa Dyn, Deepa from One Small Pot and I managed to differentiate chocolate and salted caramel.

We had to face up an experiment Richard had given us. It was a difficult to pick which cup had a higher roast level than the other. In the end we learnt the differences of coffee delights.

Exercising our noses with an aromatic smell of Cascara Tea lingers in the air.

Rewarded with starburst but the catch was we had to pinch our nose first then slowly release after the lolly was consumed in our mouth. Like an excitable kid, the sweet taste triggers all over my tongue.

COFFEE TASTING TIME! We head straight downstairs to watch delicious coffee being made by out host.

Minutes later Jimmy , who won 3rd place in Pura Dairy Famers Latte Art Championships shared with us easy, simply, earthy ways of making the perfect coffee. Siphon coffee maker also known as vacuum coffee maker brews using 2 chambers where the grounds and water vapor and vacuum produces coffee. It is rich, clean, crisp and smooth. This device was invented by Loeff in the 1830s.

To downsize from an espresso machine, the innovative ceramic dripper, V60 is importantly a great tool to making the best clean coffee. This full cone brewing, allows you to control over the fresh roasted grind. You can purchase the paper cones at Daiso for $2.80 for a packet of 15.

All these coffee demonstrations are quite a easy process and don’t involve spending $$$$$ thousands of dollars just to brew coffee. It is interesting how Jimmy and Richard use effortless methods. I was getting fuzz and happily energetic after my 5th cup of caffeine.

Seeing baristas making a good cup of espresso is an art within itself, however beautiful latte art is also a sign of a perfect coffee and a talented barista. With a little practice Jimmy makes, you can tell his prepared to make anything creative.

Katze offered 2 tier stand of handmade macrons and crafted chocolates. She strives to use organic ingredients such as Organic Belgium Chocolate imported from Belgium. There is not a single trace of artificial colours and flavours. It is essential her chocolates remain at 22 degree.
