Rengaya- Premium Wagyu Grade 9+

Posted on Updated on

If you heart beef, especially with a beef marble score of 9+ than Rengaya is the place to be. With the weather getting more cooler in Sydney I think this place is looking like a winner for best restaurant to eat this winter. There’s plenty of beef dishes to order at Rengaya and I have mentioned before they also do ALL YOU CAN EAT. Besides stuffing my face with unlimited supplies of wagyu I thought I’d switch my classy mode on and give the al carte menu a try. Dining with Yuri (SD Marketing Global) and Angelica (Angelica’s Blog) made me feel more like a lady and I had such pleasure to getting to know both of them more.

YES it’s free to join and you get to score some freebies at participating Japanese restaurants too. Note each restaurant offers freebies to members – Click here for more info.

Moving on and we have the kinako milk ($5.90) (prepared soybean) that’s a very healthy beverage in Asia and popular too. Served chilled, Angelica mentioned it had a grainy kind of texture which she quite enjoyed. From her facial expression I think that was my queue not to ask if I could try some.

For Yuri and I we opted for the Asahi Super Dry on tap 400ml ($9.80). There’s no shame in admitting that I couldn’t finish it all because I was too busy concentrating on the waygu. That’s right!

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 3

Asahi Super Dry on tap 400ml ($9.80)

We start slowly with the namuru ($8.90) that’s so much similar to Korean seasoned vegetables namul. It contains 5 kinds of vegetables including zucchini, shiitake mushroomwhite radish, bean sprouts and spinach. My face lit up when this dish was well seasoned with salt, sesame oil and vinegar. I couldn’t refuse my chopsticks to continue to grab a few more slices or strands of those pickled goodness.

Namuru ($8.90)

Are you ready to get some wagyu in your belly? If you are nodding your head in front of the computer screen then I have to introduce you to the wagyu “yukke” ($13.90)– Served with finely chopped shallots, drizzled in sesame oil, rubbed with garlic and sitting so still atop of the beef tartar was an egg yolk that had no sign it had escaped from the egg white.

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 5

Wagyu “Yukke” ($13.90)

My face was traumatised when Yuri did the unthinkable, pop the egg yolk. The quality and freshness of this dish is top notch. I always heart that creamy texture from the egg yolk and chewy feel of the shredded beef.

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 6

Baby yolk me one more time…

We were still waiting for the main star to arrive so in the meantime let’s help balance out our meat consumption with wrap-up lettuce leaves ($8.90). It includes a fair few washed large lettuce leaves that’s the size of my face, pieces of sliced carrot, green chilli, garlic and special sauce. I was informed by Yuri that Japanese people combined the leaves together with the meat so it feels healthier. I can confirm it does feel a bit healthier but I still love meat on its own.

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 7

Wrap-Up Lettuce Leaves ($8.90)

Drum rolls please and the moment we have been waiting for was the premium wagyu amusement ($49.90) that’s a chef’s recommendation of premium wagyu beef cuts of wagyu rib, wagyu loin, wagyu oyster, wagyu rib finger and wagyu ox tongue. Words cannot describe how many times my mouth orgasimed. My body was going through all sorts of feelings. Each piece of wagyu was heaven in my mouth. I felt like there was fireworks happening every few minutes in my body. No need to add oil in a pan because it knew how to oozes its fat out and provide that beefy fragant.

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 8

Premium Wagyu Amusement ($49.90)

Each wagyu piece knew how to please my mouth and body. Every bite felt satisfying with its incredible tenderness and juicy flavours. At the end of this adventurous wagyu party it looked like I had wagyu lip balm all over my lips because it was that oily.

Rengaya2015_Nessy Eater 9

Premium wagyu beef right there.

The stone pot mentaiko bibimbap with soup ($15.90) arrives sizzling with vegetables, egg, chili cod roe, squid and of course rice. It was no joke this rice was pipping hot and comes with a bowl of hot miso soup and a dollop of sweet and spicy miso paste just in case you think you’ve got what it takes to handle that extra kick.

Wagyu lettuce us be together…

The girls were eager to fulfill their dessert stomach’s cravings and so was I, so we order the shiratama cream anmitsu ($15.90) that includes kanten with shiratama and sweet red beans topped with one scoop of vanilla and green tea ice cream served with sweet black syrup and seasonal fruits. This beautiful platter had caught my eye and it was pretty darn epic to see black syrup being poured on top of the two large scoops of ice-cream.

Bathe me with more black syrup!

We couldn’t pass the “WA 和 (Japanese)” Plate ($18.90) as it had so many components on the one plate. To warm our souls we had the shiratama zenzai, which is pretty much red bean soup. Next we shared thick slices of warabimochi with sweet black syrup, then green tea creme brulee served with tea. There was just too many choices on this plate and I personally love anything that contains green tea in it, so I totes raised my hand high for the brulee. Definitely the kind of dessert that you would want this winter.

“Cover me in syrup” said the Warabimochi

There’s no reason for me not to return to Rengaya other than its upmarket price, but with that being said it does offer top quality meat and dishes on its menu for what you pay for. The wagyu is thumbs up and desserts is a must. I’m definitely not saying good-bye to this restaurant, instead it’s see you later alligator.

Ferry Nice to be at Papi Chulo

Posted on Updated on

Located right on the Manly Wharf, Papi Chulo will change the way you think about barbeque and meat. This place is not your usual American smokehouse as it intertwines with Brazilian and Latin American. Their menu is fantastic for the meat lovers and if you have any intention on ordering the entire menu, go ahead! However it’s best to bring at least seven foodie mates along, well at least we did. Ok, it felt right to organise another food blogger’s event with the opportunity to overlook Manly Wharf during the day.

Papi (1)

Finally made it to Papi Chulo’s in 30 minutes flat from Circular Quay wharf.

Papi (2)

Here at Papi Chulo the view is fabulous.

The only time you’ll notice me sitting in silence is when the Smoked wagyu brisket (300 gm) ($34) arrives. It’s too damn delicious and has abundant marbling that moistens the meat from the inside. Be sure to taste the natural smoked juices and yes you’ll know there is a difference. Reality is that their wagyu servings has limited availability for seven people but overall they were mighty good.

Just look at the brisket closely, it’s so hypnotising.

My eyes were also interested in the Smoked hot wings ($16) with comeback sauce. I must confess, I ate three out of nine. It was so hard to stop grabbing the entire bowl of mid-wings for myself because they were the most popular appetisers on the table. Let’s face it- the wings are crisped and create the perfect combination of smoked madness. It’s really wings that everyone will love.

Papi (6)

Smoked hot wings ($16)

Curly fries ($9) tasted heavily on the tongue, but I personally liked it best when it’s bathed in the creamy spicy comeback sauce. They are somewhat twirly, if you dive your fingers into the basket and there’s so much fun when dunked into the sauce.

Although I didn’t have the opportunity to try Irene’s Zalamero smoothie ($8) because well her blog name already says it all (Irene’s Getting Fat). I can already imagine this tropical shake to be constant with creamy coconut milk and fresh passionfruit and mango sorbet. To confirm, you’ll have to ask Irene. Haha!

Love a bit of pea-NUTS in your beverage? Then the El Mani ($8) will probably be the best nutty treat everyone will love. Sorry to the peeps who are allergic to peanuts, you’re really missing out with rich peanut butter that is super thick and creamy, finished with Pringle shaped chocolate chips containing nuts, off course.

So awesome to witness what Papi Chulo was cooking.

We were all in desperate need for some more protein so we had to order their signature dish, Papi Chulo BBQ platter (serves 2-4) ($86) – I don’t think there is a marriage more perfect than the one that exists between half rack lamb ribs, 150gm each of sliced wagyu brisket, chopped spicy pork and sliced pork belly . Another glorious fact is that they serve it along with a bowl of colourful pickles and super soft bread. I must say it does look tremendous on the camera. They key to devouring this platter is that there is no key. You’ll be in a race amongst six foodies to fight for the caramelised tender pork belly, smoky barbecue lamb ribs, shredded pork that is well marinated and slices of more wagyu brisket. All the meat falls apart so easily and does create a perfect intense pit barbeque flavour. As for the bread rolls, I ate three. In all seriousness, their rolls are well made with that fluffiness texture. I can guarantee that they won’t last long once served to the table.

Colourful sides of vegetable pickles

We know the main attraction here is the barbecue meet, so I guess the “Sloppy Joe” ($18) wasn’t a star at our table. Containing pulled kurobuta porkpit beans, jalapeño, nacho cheese on two soft buns. You’ll  be loving this if they didn’t serve Papi Chulo BBQ platter.

What’s next Chef?

Arriving fashionably late, Amy from milkteaxx orders Papi Chulo burger ($18) With grain fed beef, baconAmerican cheese, tomato, lettuce, pickles and hugged by two honey- coloured soft buns. Seeing Amy’s hungry reaction, I think you’ll really enjoyed it.

Papi (18)

I don’t think the #FoodiesatManly were going to just leave without ordering the entire dessert menu. Look who we have here, Banana Split ($14) with fresh split banana, chocolate fudge, peanut praline, banana ice cream, peanut butter ice cream, and cherry jam, whipped cream and glace cherry. A bit too ordinary, but we managed to finish it. I was expecting something extreme, for example maybe 100s of 1000s? Or maybe dressing it up with almond flakes and light sparkles? Yeah, I know…a bit extreme 😛

Papi (14)

Banana Split ($14)

There is something special about the Warm chocolate chip cookie ($14). I don’t know if it’s the scoop of vanilla malt ice-cream or the drizzling butterscotch sauce or maybe it’s the crumply macadamia brittle. But this famous classic American cookie is warm and chewy and goes so well with a glass of cold milk.

Papi (16)

I thoroughly enjoyed the Pear and rhubarb cobbler ($14) with ginger crumble, crème anglaise, orange and ginger ice-cream. Can you smell the smallish chunks of fresh pear and rhubarb? It certainly had my attention with the perfect combination of flavours. The ginger crumble and ginger ice-cream kept multiplying with its own textures.

Papi Chulo is a great place to relax and enjoy the lovely bright casual atmosphere. It’s not hard to see why this restaurant is obscenely popular. Hospitality here makes it more welcoming place for everyone. I highly recommend you to catch the Sydney Ferries at Circular Quay because it’s difficult getting to Manly by car if you are not familiar with the area. As a bonus, you get to see the amazing Harbour Bridge and water views.

RENGAYA

Posted on Updated on

Raw raw meatasaurus Ness has arrived! So when word got out that RENGAYA is offering premium wagyu buffet, YES premium wagyu! marble score 9+ for $69 per person my brain just  automatically calculated how many order’s I’d make to eat all of those wagyu. It took me by surprise that this restaurant offers buffet because a few years back they provide minimum selections of its finest wagyu and servings weren’t that pleasing for my wallet.

When the orders came out, I just couldn’t wait to get my chopsticks straight into those meats and quickly dunk it into the BBQ pan. Whilst it was cooking,  I started my appetizer ‘Yukke’, which is beef tartar. It tasted so delicious, I ended up not sharing it.

To whine down and keep me feeling energize from the over load of wagyu i had ordered Choya Plum Wine (Osaka). It was indeed refreshing. Soon after, a round of Asahi Super Dry on tap beer came filling up the table.

Halfway into eating glorious juicy meat, I noticed beside my other dishes of meat was beef rib porridge. The appearance did not win me, but the flavor of it won my taste buds.

Our last order was up and to finish it off  to a lovely meal was dessert.  My stomach felt like it was about to explode but I always seem to have a extra space in my tummy for my sweet tooth.

I could not resist to eat WA Plate by myself even though I felt my pants were about to burst. Luckily it was a ideal choice because it was incredible. The sweet black syrup drowned the warabimochi so well together. And green tea cre’me brulee was a finishing touch along with organic green tea. And don’t forget the red bean soup, marvelous .
