Lunch with Poh Ling Yeow at PappaRich Parramatta

Posted on Updated on

It is PappaRich o’clock here at Nessy Eater and besides telling you readers a wide range of delicious food, Nessy Eater girl was very lucky to join Poh Ling Yeow for lunch. It’s a long story of how I first met Poh. Back in 2009 when Poh first appeared on a reality television series called MasterChef Australia I think that’s where I fell in love with this girl. She was my first girl crush I’ve ever encountered. Poh being the beauty queen on television and me avoiding homework just so I can watch her battle it out in the kitchen was something I truly never regretted as a teen. Having a long history of being one of Poh’s fans, I never thought this fan girl would ever experience her cooking, but I did. Click here. To top it with Poh cooking dinner for Nessy Eater girl the next thing we knew was we were joining lunch with her and other fun food bloggers at PappaRich Parramatta. We made sure we spent every single second with her!

Poh PappaRich (3)What’s on the menu you Pappa?

Okay…so having lunch with Poh meant it was an obligation to bring our appetite along and I am certainly glad that I did. The first dish that came out to us hungry food bloggers was the Pappa deep fried chicken skin. To my surprise, this was my very first time experiencing those crunchy skins and I loved it. The crispy skins offer a bright crunch when paired with the sweet and sour sauce. A very satisfying dish that can be easily stolen.

Poh PappaRich (6)Oh the skin was incredibly crunchy!

Another delectable dish was the roti canai that is freshly made in the restaurant and is served with curry dips and spicy sambal sauce. When you first look at the roti, you’ll notice the edges on the outside is crispy and when you dig into it it is super fluffy.

Poh PappaRich (8)Doesn’t she look POH-FECT??? 😀 ❤

Would you like to be my chicken wing? Because these Pappa fried chicken wings is a delicious addition to any meal. I kid you not these wings provide a crackly crust that is the hallmark for PappaRich and shares a delightful salty flavour. I feel like these chicks been double fried because they are extremely crunchy. Each bite provides a handful of comfort.

We even had a highly dramatic and entertaining teh tarik demonstration during our lunch. This was fascinating and fun to watch as the demonstrator stretched the tea to about one meter long. By the way teh tarik means stretched tea and requires a lot of skills to master pulling the tea, especially when it’s fifty degrees hot!

Poh PappaRich (12) Teh Tarik demonstration

Poh PappaRich (15)The boy has talent!

To overcome this fried madness we resorted to ordering many Malaysian drinks to cool our stomachs down. PappaRich beverages include Longan Milk HoneyMatcha Rocks that consists of green tea ice-cream with red bean and soy milk. Another famous drink that one often needs to quench a thirst is the Coconut Paradise.

Poh PappaRich (16)From left to right: Longan Milk HoneyMatcha Rocks  and Coconut Paradise

Malaysia is very popular for their beef and chicken satay, so duh it’s required for the table. It’s brilliant how PappaRich marinates these as they pay special attention to turmeric for that strong yellow colour. They do an excellent job at replicating the authentic flavours from Malaysia and the peanut sauce too.

Poh PappaRich (17) Satay Mix: Beef and chicken

Speaking of the chicken, you might want to try the Biryani rice with red chicken and sambal prawn– It’s a classic dish that comes with fresh juicy pieces of sliced chicken, cooked prawns and basmati rice. You will have to ask Irene’s Getting Fat on her thoughts about this dish, but I can tell you she happily left with a grin on her face.

The Vegetarian siew mai is such a stunner. I still can’t quite figure out what’s in them and how they can be shaped like that.

Poh PappaRich (28)Vegetarian Siew Mai

Can’t quite put my finger on what’s inside the vegetarian fu chook rolls, but they are still tasty for the vegetarians out there.

Poh PappaRich (29)Vegetarian Fu Chook Rolls

Now lets get serious about the Pappa prawn mee laksa that’s a fabulous heart warming Malaysian-Chinese fusion containing spicy prawnshalf boiled egg, shredded chicken, bean sprouts and spinach. Buried in the red sea includes long yellow noodles!

Poh PappaRich (24)Pappa Prawn Mee Laksa

Deliberately held my stomach to try the Pappa chicken rice with steamed chicken. This is an all star favourite as their chicken is perfectly smooth, juicy and tender. You might want to experiment with the flavours and textures in this dish as it includes half cooked bean sprouts and chicken broth soup.

Let’s take a quick look at the dry curry egg noodle with steamed chicken. The noodles hands down complements the thick curry sauce. It definitely stimulated my appetite with the side dish of fresh pieces of chicken that’s bathed in sesame oil and sweet soy sauce.

And what do we have here that taste so extra special…It’s the dry koray teow with steamed chicken. It’s not your regular kind of noodles for Sydney but an absolute favourite in Malaysia. It’s something that shouldn’t be missed out when you visit PappaRich. Although it looks simple, however this plate is packed with flavours that’s waiting for your taste buds to give it a go.

So sad our lunch had to end and saying good-bye to Poh was very difficult for me. And if you look closely at the image below, it’s a photo within a photo!!! Tehehe 😀

To sum up, it was very lovely seeing Poh again and I am so thrilled she signed my photo. PappaRich does deliver authentic Malaysian cuisines at an affordable price. Make sure you do not miss their roti, satay skewers and Pappa chicken rice with steamed chicken.

Hooters in Parramatta – The American Fun

Posted on Updated on

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Me hanging out at HOOTERS on a Saturday night must be odd, right? Well if you mention a few words like chicken wings, burgers and curley fries, then that’s my entertainment and happy meal for the night. You’d be surprised HOOTERS is a family restaurant not just for the males but women and children. In fact inside looks reasonably nice, glossy wooden tables and chairs with a collection of American road signs and a massive open bar area. There’s at least 2 dozen of plasma screen TV’s mostly broadcasting a range of sports and perhaps most customers are too busy concentrating recent hockey scores than the HOOTER girls, who are dressed in trademark white singlets, mini tangerine shorts and who can forget their lovely BIG personalities, so attractive.

HOOTERS Parramtta_Nessy Eater (1)

Well Hello Nikki.

I have just the way to kick start this post , boys and girls I present to you 20 Pieces Boneless Chicken ($28.95)!!! Arriving pipping hot from the deep fryer land. This famous boneless chicken is glistening ominoulsy with SUPER THICK and STICKY orangey sauce. The flavour is addictively sweet and tasty. The spiciness level of these chickens will depend on the choice of hot sauce. Votes were in and medium spiciness for the table.

20 Pieces MEIDUM Boneless Chicken ($28.95)

I’ve been looking for you Fried Pickles ($9.95) – I know it sounds a bit extreme but I’ve got to stop sounding so uptight and live a little. We are in HOOTERS! Let’s have a little DEEP-FRIED  pickle. We were warned about this dish. And I don’t normally eat pickle, believe it or not. I try to avoid it as much as I can but this basket of lightly breaded sliced pickles is the BOMB! The pickle brings a new crunch. It is dredged in a tasty pickle juice coating and is perfectly golden brown. And if you want to challenge the pickle flavour then dip those babies into the creamy cheese sauce.

Well that’s not fair when I turn my head for a split second and this is what I have left. I shouldn’t be shocked at all how these wings can disappear in the matter of seconds. The 20 pieces of MEDIUM Chicken Wings ($24.95) is a tad different to the boneless chicken. That’s because these wings have bones in them. Bet you didn’t know that right? 😛 As well as less saucer but still freaken tasty.

TV Entertainment for ALL AGES

I am glad HOOTERS is on top of this stuff, off course I am talking about the Western BBQ Burger ($19.95)Their is just so much stuffing in this burger like juicy slices of bacon, deep-fried onion rings, fresh lettuces, melted American cheddar cheese and fat chunky beefy patty that is more than a mouthful. Aside from the burger there’s a handful of curley fries.

Can you handle this?

For the Quesadillas- Steak ($19.95) a light fluffy warm tortilla filled with a savory mixture of fat juicy chunks of steak and layers and layers of melted cheese served with red tomato based Mexican rice and fresh salad. Least popular appetiser for the table but I think that’s because it’s missing the smashed avocado that adds the delicious twist on an old Mexican favourite.

And you thought we couldn’t handle MEDIUM wings…Well hello HOT WING department.  Would you dare to refuse the 20 Pieces of HOT Chicken Wings ($24.95) ? These wings were a spontaneous creation for the table. River of oil kept flowing out at every single bite. The spice is overwhelming for a beginner but medium-hot for the intermediates. You may need to be saved from their cheese sauce ($0.50) if ever your in doubt and can’t conqueror the entire piece of wing. The chicken wings can’t be described in words, it’s a feeling you’d have to experience it yourself.

It is ridiculous how the Rib Combo ($49.95) – HALF pork ribs with 300 grams rump with curley fries can be pretty massive for 2 people. For a real awesome value this beast of a plate is suppose to be for 1 person however if you can tank it alone then order it. Let me start describing the pork ribs– slow-smoked baby back ribs covered with HOOTERS BBQ glaze. Can you see how HOOTERS sauce ’em up real nice? Caution: Those ribs involve a lot finger licking from the sauce. Glad that’s not over because the juicy rump is so firm and flavoursome that I squealed out loud.

Can’t pin down how HOOTERS fries are so freaken curley.

SHOT GUNS  pork rib! Oink.

Mr Clarke Kent spotted one super lengthy fries sitting on his wooden plate. This potato must be between 25-30cm long. C-R-A-Z-Y!!!

Have you heard of the saying “No Curls, No Girls” ?

My HOOTER experience was almost over and I just couldn’t say goodbye to our lovely waitress Nickki without taking a photo with her. You see what I did to my face? Haha. DIY troll emotion icon. I couldn’t help it.

HOOTERS Parramtta_Nessy Eater (14)

That is an amazing pair of eyes Nikki. Don’t you think? 😛

HOOTERS Parramtta_Nessy Eater (16)

Sweet way to say good-bye Nikki.

(Note: Ignore the price of the bill as this post did not mention a few items.)

Apart from HOOTERS world-famous buffalo chicken wings, premium juicy beef burgers and extremely curley fries, HOOTERS atmosphere is definitely unlike any other…as there is always something fun happening every minute. Yes, it is kind of overlooked at because of the girls but amazingly each of their dishes we ordered from the menu is very decent. Do order a few drinks while watching sport games as it adds an extra vibe to your entertainment.

Pho Pasteur- National Dish of Vietnam

Posted on Updated on

Popping by to window shop at Parramatta Westfield I decided to ring up my all time favorite shopping and eating buddy, Ms. Boobie Trap. It was such a relief that we came across Pho Pasteur as we were trying to avoid the shopping mall so our wallets won’t be too empty at the end of the day. Pho Pasteur , Parramatta (1) Most Vietnamese restaurants serve phở Sài Gòn with every meals that is ordered. Typically this dish is complimentary with any main dish you order. Garnished with fresh crisp ingredients like lemon wedge, chopped chili, Thai basil that has a distinctive flavour of mint and nutritious bean sprouts. Pho Pasteur , Parramatta (3) We really appreciated the generous serving of the Special Beef Noodle Soup includes beef and offal ($12.00 large) also known as phở.  The silky smooth white rice noodles kept appearing over and over again like it was non-stop. Pho is primarily served with thick slices of beef, apparently between uncooked to cooked. This depends how long you prefer to soak your juicy tender beef. For example if you want it to be fully cooked, bathe it till you cannot see any pinkish colour. They were quite heavy on decorating the bowl with white onion strips, which adds more flavours to the broth. For beef pho, the broth is cooked with beef bones, charred onions and spices. The flavour and texture of the soup was enjoyable to sip.

Pho Pasteur , Parramatta (3B)

For a scorching hot weather the Chè also known as Three Colour Bean Drink ($4.50) is a fun chilling dessert drink that is commonly made with yellow mung beans, kidney beans, red beans, clear agar worm strips, creamy coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk atop crushed ice. Truly a classic Vietnamese sweet beverage you’d find in almost every table. What I love about this playful drink is creating a mess within the tall glass cup. Every swirl you make with a shiny metal spoon or a plastic straw you are creating a new flavour.

Pho Pasteur , Parramatta (5)

Coconut Drink ($4) has long been a trendy drink for the Vietnamese and it was our duty to order it. So so SWEET! Pho Pasteur , Parramatta (4) Even though our visit to Pho Pasteur was short and we didn’t order any other dishes, we quite liked the noodle soup due to the portion size and the flavour of the broth. And if you plan to save room for dessert but not sure if you can then the Three Colour Bean Drink is the solution. Teehee.

Real Italian Gem at Nonna Maria’s Place

Posted on Updated on

Finding a good authentic Italian place for dinner is typically a complex task, especially when it is peak hour and all the restaurants on Church Street, Parramatta is packed. Thankfully I suddenly remembered Helen from Grab Your Fork recent post.

It is not difficult to find this place at night as Christmas lights sparkle and flash all around Nonna Maria’s Place restaurant.

Noona Maria (1)

Spotted!  Italian vibe coming from the corner. The red and white striped table cloth and messy waxed candles gave it away.

Noona Maria (2)

Who doesn’t love freebies? It was pretty generous of the restaurant to serve free, yes, FREE Fresh Bread and a Jug of Home-Made Lemonade, made the old fashioned way!

Noona Maria (3)

Noona Maria (4)

Complimentary Fresh bread

Free lemonade made me smile throughout the whole night. It tasted unreal – perfect balance of sweet and sour.

Noona Maria (5)

Strangely the hat and the umbrella reminded me of the English comic actor Charlie Chaplin . Agree or disagree?

Noona Maria (6)

The entire evening this cheeky statue was accompanying me while I feast on Nonna’s spectacular home style dishes.

Noona Maria (7)

From the home style pizzette daily board we tried Quattro Formaggi ($8) – provolone, pecorino, gorgonzola and bocconcini. Four types  of cheese on a handmade pizza dough. Very cheesy!

Noona Maria (9)

Then came the grilled Tasmanian Smooth Dory ($22) – A very large portion of fish smothered in mint and garlic sauce. On the side-beautifully plated colourful salad with two wedges of lemon.

Noona Maria (8)

I was salivating over the Homemade sweet potato gnocchi with Carbonara  ($16). A definite gnocchi WINNING dish! With a generous portion of plump sweet potato cushions dished up with bacon, onions in light cream sauce with Mama Nonna’s secret herbs.

Noona Maria (11)

Make sure to savor some bread so you can dunk it in the classic Minestrone Soup ($12). An authentic soup reminds me of my awesome Italian aunt’s home cooking.  I absolutely love the mix vegetables in one bowl-very heart-warming soup.

Noona Maria (12)

The Fettuccine with Boscaiola ($15) a scrumptious mix of freshly sliced mushroom- ours seemed to be hiding under the long, thick fettuccine, shredded bacon, crushed garlic and in light cream sauce.

Noona Maria (13)

Fancy a little spice in your dish?  Ask the friendly waitress for some house-made piping hot chili sauce.

Noona Maria (14)

I adored the overlapping melted wax on the wine bottles. It really adds a sense of romance and to the Italian family vibe.

Noona Maria (15)

Betty Boop awaits as we pay at the counter. Such a throwback to the 1930s era.

Noona Maria (16)

Nonna Maria’s Place is a real authentic Italian gem in the heart of Parramatta. It’s a fantastic restaurant for cheap date nights, big family gathering and hang outs with friends. The best part about this place is the free lemonade and opening hours. They open 7 days a week!
