Korean Fried Chicken at Red Pepper

Posted on Updated on

So tell me dear readers…what is the best method to encourage one to exercise? For me, the only manner that’s worth exercising is my intestines at Strathfield Sports Club. Here at the club, magic finger licking starts with some Korean Fried Chicken at Red Pepper. You’d be keen to try this fry chicken joint as it offers over 10 different flavours.

Explore the Spring Onion Chicken (Half $18) with satisfying fried crunchiness with nothing but a light drizzle of wasabi sauce and a small puddle hidden underneath the bed of chicken. There’s a generous amount of happiness when the sauce touches your tastebuds and oh you won’t forget about that crispy satisfaction. Do you see a pile of green spring onion? Made me feel less guilty for eating this dish. Hehe

Soy Sauce Chicken (Half $17) is made for you if you simply just enjoy soy sauce on its own. This is the best KFC version for sticky delicate, crackly crust on the skin. It is marinated so well with a sugar snap of sweetness. Having this dish all to yourself is the key to happiness. Teehee.

MmmmMmm do you want cheese with that? The Snow Cheese Chicken (Half $18) is grated and dusted with cheddar cheese power. Everything together was kind of not what we expected, however it was tasty though.

I have a thing for foods that have a hint of sweetness and you can bet the Sweet + Spicy Chicken (Half $18) was a winner in my eyes. HOT DAYUM! Each bite delights with rich spicy flavour and sprinkles of roasted garlic. It’s deliciously simple and you wouldn’t want to miss this!

The chickens are marinated so well.

Who is counting calories when there’s the original Fried Chicken (Half $16) to think about? The hunt for the perfect golden battered fried chicken may be over…or not. A birdie told me that Gami is still number one. All I know is this delightful crispy chicken sure wasn’t at all oily. The beautiful deep fried coating tastes as great as it looks.

Give into temptation with the Spicy Chilli Chicken (Half $18) – It’s glazed in super spicy sauce and dear god your tongue will BURN! Warning: you may be in tears, so if you’re a guy, try to stay strong in front of the girls. Haha. These do look finger-lickin’ good, don’t cha think? I have discovered I do have a weakness for chicken and overtime been a fan for fried chicken. The sauce here at Red Pepper is delicious and you’ll find yourself demolishing the entire menu if you had a spare stomach. It’s worth the calories!

Memorable Moments in Melbourne (Part 2)

Posted on Updated on

Not surprisingly, Melbourne has so much to offer, such hype I’m surrounded by festivity, food, fashion and fun. I was blown away by a bakery store called N.Lee Bakery that I had tried, recommended by a friend of mine, who conveniently works down the road.

He mentioned the lines would be enormous and it was best to go before the lunch hour rush. Thank goodies I followed his advice. When we got there we were lucky last in the queue. One minute later *gasped* I turned around I see a line full of people behind me, coming from main streets, alley way streets and even cars. It’s quite a culture that draws attention to their delicious freshly baked crusty breads and flaky pastries.

N Lee (1)

Their service is quick and friendly, it’s an efficient in and out service, but if you’re a person who really can’t wait then there’s a few wooden tables and chairs for you to unwind.

N Lee (4)

Packed full of cooperate dressed people, I knew there wouldn’t be a slight chance for us to sit and eat in. So we decided to order *drums rolls* their classic Vietnamese Roll ($6.90) for take-away.

I can finally see the reason why my friend suggested this roll. I was possessed by the lot. Starting from the bread, the outer glazed layer, I had to HAD TO brush my fingers a few times on the outer layer and say my good-byes before I deconstructed it. Gently unfolding the roll, I could see the bright colours of fresh veggie ingredients of shredded carrots, few strands of coriander that perfumed the entire roll, looking innocently towards me. Tucked beneath the overcrowded veggies, a slice or two of roast pork and Vietnamese pork and drizzled fish sauce that had soaked in the warm fluffy bread.

Taking that first bite was mind-blowing. The crunchy, crispy and flavoursome feeling I had absorbed lead to me forget everyone around me and that included my friend. It got a little messy as crispy, flakey pieces of the outer layer roll kept falling as I took a bite every single time.

After lunch I spent my precious hours wandering through the busy streets and touristy places. Constantly walking back and forth the CBD I was drawn by the electric colours on the walls at Croft Al off Payness Pl. With curiosity circulating in my mind, my body took control on its own and drifted towards the rusty alley way.

I was influenced by the artistic walls that was graffitied along the entire alley way. I was a little concerned whether to continue walking or do a u turn as I was by myself, so I suggest bring a friend or a bunch of friends to share the electrifying experience.

The night ended with the craziest Korean Fried Chicken aka KFC at Gami for dinner.

Gami (1)

Move over Arisun! Gami has taken over your crown and introduced the most mouth-watering, lip smacking and finger licking experience one can never imagine with fried Chicken. I was amused by the constant cries and facial expressions of my friends thinking they were constipating, but really they were just enjoying that chicken.

We ordered Half Original Fried Chicken ($16)

Gami (6)

We also ordered a jug of Gami house bitter [Brunswick Bitter] ($14.50) which came with a bowl of side dishes, sweet and sour radish and prawn crackers. This would be great if soccer was on!

Gami (2)

Cheese, yes please! Corn Cheese ($9) enveloped so well together with the sweet sweet corn drenched in mayo and stretchy baked cheese becomes pretty addictive!

Gami (3)

For the LOVE of CHEEESSSSSSSE….

Gami (5)

It was such a bummer the Seafood & spring onion pancake($13) turned out to be a disappointment. At first I questioned if we ordered this as it was served to our table. I must be seafood blind as I couldn’t see any…Maybe call it spring onion pancake next time. There was plenty of spring onions in this pancake of ours.

Gami (4)

To avoid disappointment make a booking before heading there! Otherwise you’d be only watching others eat that juicy chicken.

Soban Korean Cuisine, Chatswood Westfield

Posted on Updated on

If you come across muddled oversized wooden walls in Westfield Chatswood then you have landed at Soban Korean Cuisine (Shop 602 Level 6 (Cinema Level) Westfield Shopping Center Sydney, NSW 2067).  The entrance is large and enormous and is connected with another restaurant Towon Chinese Cuisine that serves a different blend of cuisine, Chinese.

Soban Korean Cuisine (1)

After the waiter jotted down our orders we were served complementary banchan in 6 individual appetiser bowls! The joy of taste testing each and every dish is like entering a land of deliciousness. A combination of Sour Cabbage, Kimchi that is fermented cabbage, Pasta Salad served in mayonnaise dressing,  Odeng Bokum- stir fried fish cake quite tasty and a hint of sweetness, Dooboo Jorim- braised tofu very delicious and Manulchongjim- seasoned garlic stems a bit spicy.  Also salt was provided.

It’s never easy selecting one favourite dish though, but the braised tofu (Dooboo Jorim) drenched in soy sauce was indeed my top pick because it was it was flavoursome!

Soban Korean Cuisine (2)

Kalguksu has long been one of the mainstay dishes served in the Korean home and is traditionally considered seasonal food therefore it was essential to order Beef Kalguksu ($11.90) a house speciality. It has the noodles arranged over shredded braised beef, strips of egg, chopped spring onion,  garnished with a slice of chilli.  The broth is made from beef bones which is heart warming for the winter season in Sydney.

Soban Korean Cuisine (3)

Another classic winter dish is Samgyetang ($25) also known as chicken ginseng soup or in Cantonese ‘Yun Sum Gai Tong’, is an inspirational soup based dish. It consists of a whole chicken stuffed with black rice and off course Korean ginseng  and strips of egg to decorate. The chicken broth soup was addictive, you can really taste the ginseng  enriching it’s flavours and taste unlike any other place. It’s usually the chicken broth that takes over the ginseng flavour  and they were very openhanded to give 3 huge pieces of ginseng! Most places only give one tiny piece which you can barely see with a chopstick.

If you’re ever feeling blue, apparently chicken ginseng soup does help fight common sickness for example cold or flu. So you know where to head to if you have to battle it out with the cold and flu.

Can’t wait to taste more of their traditional Korean dishes on my next visit!

KOH-YA, Sydney

Posted on Updated on

Thank goodies this week is over for me. I’ve had a really tough week and I don’t know where to begin.  Let me just say I’ve been in tears throughout this week because one of my goals  that I’ve dreamt since forever is not coming closer to me than what was planned. It seems like the doors are closing on me. But I do know there is hope. With the support and comfort  of friends and family I managed to recharge myself all back to a normal again.

Besides my rollercoaster week and the cooler weather coming closer than expected I ended up at KOH-YA (Shop 1, 9-17 Young St.,Neutral Bay NSW 2089) celebrating the joy of this week finishing.

This restaurant is one of my most favorite in my list because it gives me the  freedom to eat as much as I like within one and half hours time frame.  I recommend to go for the banquet ($39.90p.p), it is a fair bit , but for what you pay, you can select a lot from the menu and service is provided that they bring it to your table straight away. It beats having to line up around the buffet . ( Click on the first image and it will direct you to their website)

Koh-Ya (8)

Oh! And if you have a sweet tooth, it includes desserts as well.

I had a craving for something soothing and Seeweisse Beer for ($4.50) did the trick.  The beer rich, sweet and earthy flavour that blends so well with the BBQ.

Koh-Ya (1)

Food arrived so quickly even though it was a full house on a Friday night. Beef sashimi was demolished in seconds because it was that good.

Koh-Ya (2)

I was committed to order something healthy at a BBQ place and glad I did the right thing. This plain looking spinach salad seemed to be popular at our table. So fresh and crisp with sprinkles of almond with a dash of unknown dressing that made me order a few more.

Koh-Ya (3)

Who can forget the famous Yukke (raw beef with egg yolk). That almost made me forget their was a BBQ happening.

Koh-Ya (4)

So pleased that night because “Special of the day” was salmon and tuna sashimi. By judging the waiter’s expression of amusement I think I had ordered a fair amount  of sashimi to the point the chef may of giving me large chunks rather than regular size sashimi pieces. I may of eaten more than one kilo of raw fish. Insert high pitched squeal haha.

Koh-Ya (7)

Under beef tongue arrived and straight away cooked because the seasoning smelt so good and yes it was tender and juicy when cooked to medium rare.

Koh-Ya (5)

I haven’t forgotten the best part of this place OX TONGUE. We ordered ten serves for starters and slowly ordered another ten then five and finally two serves. So total twenty-seven serves between three peeps isn’t soooo embarrassing.

Koh-Ya (6)

Tip: Order a bowl of rice and let the meat sit on top of the rice so the rice can absorb the oil and seasoning. And there you have it rice with meaty seasoning.  Rice and meat goes really well together.  Especially for cold windy nights coming closer.

Koh-Ya (9)

Such shame my tummy couldn’t fit as much food as I would have wanted. There is so many variety of food to choose from. This is just a quarter of what I had ordered for the mains. As for desserts six scoops of green tea and a plate of mix fruit completed my belly.

If you’re smart don’t wear anything fancy because your most likely going to come out downright smelly and dirty. On the other hand satisfied and filling.
